1. Rotary's Youth Protection Programs protect both the youth and the Rotarian

12. Teenagers often make up abuse allegations in order to get attention or to get what they want from adults
13. Rotary Youth Program Officers are the only people responsible for assuring the safety of students
14. If someone is offended by a particular behavior and it was not the intent of the person to be offensive, this fact should be taken into consideration when determining if abuse or harassment has occured
15. When receiving a report of abuse from a student in Rotary Youth Programs, ALL of the following are important:
1-To remain calm
2- To get the facts
3- To make a written record
4 - To get the other side of the story from the alleged perpetrator
16. While sexual abuse is a serious issue, it is less likely in Rotary Youth Programs than in other youth programs around the world
17. In order for students to report sexual abuse, we must assure them of complete confidentiality
18. It is important at all times to know the difference between abuse and harassment, because it will guide you in what you report to Rotary
19. Sexual harassment is any unwelcome behavior, whereas sexual abuse is not only unwelcome sexual behavior, but it is also explicit or implicit sexual activity forced on a victim
20. Teenage victims of sexual abuse may be reluctant to report it because they feel responsible
21. Every adult who has a volunteer role in Rotary Youth Programs must indicate in writing, their understanding of agreement to adhere to the Rotary Statement of Conduct for Working with Youth
22. To be safe, all use of humor should be avoided when dealing with exchange students
23. ALL of the following procedures help prevent youth abuse and harassment:
1- Background checks
2- Volunteer Affidavits
3- Volunteer Training
4- Getting a detailed sexual history
24. Students who report abuse should be advised of the seriousness of making allegations and should be told to get their facts straight before saying anything
25. Every adult in Rotary Youth Programs, Rotarians and all other adult volunteers, is responsible for protecting the safety of students
26. Adults in Rotary Youth Programs are obligated to take appropriate action when peer-to-peer abuse is suspected
27. If adults get along well with youth, it is unlikely that they will be sex abusers
28. Since we all have different perspectives and different cultures view sexuality differently, there is no way to avoid offensive behavior until someone points it out
29. Youth Protection Certification is a one time thing. Once complete I am set for life.
30. It is always a good practice to avoid situations where one adult and one youth are alone. It is always best to have 3 people, either two adults and one youth, or one adult and two youth
31. A hostile environment can exist in a school, home or community and is any place where unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature creates and intimidating or offensive setting
32. If a youth comes to you with a story, or you observe something, you should report it to your Club Youth Program Chairman
33. There are three parts to the Youth Protection Certification
1- Passing this test at 80% or better
2- Purchasing a background check and passing
3- Accepting the terms of Rotary's Code of Conduct for working with youth


34. Once I am certified, a member of the YPP program will post this information to my District and Club Database record where it is visible to my Club President, the Assistant Governor, and District Youth Leaders
